{"id":1032,"date":"2014-04-03T14:21:07","date_gmt":"2014-04-03T14:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.skyswitch.com\/?p=1032"},"modified":"2022-02-18T09:51:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-18T09:51:14","slug":"evolution-area-code","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/skyswitch.com\/blog\/evolution-area-code\/","title":{"rendered":"Evolution of the Area Code"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent announcement that Connecticut will be introducing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/business\/20140303\/connecticut-to-get-new-959-area-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new 959 area code<\/a> this summer has gotten me thinking about area codes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I work with area code issues virtually day as a integral aspect of DID Management. \u00a0The SkySwitch DID platform, allows resellers to order, provision and <a href=\"https:\/\/skyswitch.com\/\">manage DIDs<\/a> based on \u00a0NPA-NXX (that is shorthand for the codes set forth in the North American Numbering Plan, also known as NANP). However, I never really gave much thought to the societal repercussions associated with the many changes that are affecting our phone numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have ever wondered about the history of the area code, the February 2014 edition of The Atlantic contains a good read entitled&nbsp;<b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/02\/our-numbered-days-the-evolution-of-the-area-code\/283803\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Our Numbered Days: The Evolution of the Area Code<\/a>.<br><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article discusses the cultural and social aspects of area codes and gives a history of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), including a description of the Neustar team that currently mans the helm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>So who has control over the numbering system today? That honor belongs, officially, to a 12-person team working out of an office in Sterling, Virginia: the current administrators of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nanpa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North American Numbering Plan<\/a>. For a brief period in the 1990s, it was Lockheed Martin that oversaw that administration; after Lockheed got involved with telecom concerns, however, the FCC decided that it needed a neutral and non-governmental body to administer the nation&#8217;s numbers.
